Server Hardware, Backup Power, HDD Backup & Data Recovery

Server Hardware:
Our virtual hosting web servers are housed in a 80,000 sq. ft. building especially designed as a server facility. Our servers are state of the art rack mounted units in a constant humidity and temperature controlled environment. The server hardware is mounted in 7 ft. tall rack cabinets with open backs. Network cabling is routed down one side of the inside rear of each rack, and power conditioning cables and main AC power is routed down the opposite side of the inside rear of each rack. These racks are arranged in rows about 5 ft. apart. These racks are mounted on a computer floor, raised three feet above the main cement floor of the building. This makes for a very clean server rack installation and facilitates easy of server maintenance.

Backup Commercial Power:
Main AC power to the server facility is delivered by two separate commercial power feeds from two entirely different power systems into a massive power switcher system. These redundant power feeds are automatically switched from one power feed to the other, in case of a failure. This is to insure that if one power system goes down the other will be still be on line, and usable. The chances of both commercial power feeds going down at the same time is unimaginable.

UPS Backup Power:
In the unlikely event of both of these commercial power feeds going down at the same time, the facility also has a hugh Liebert UPS back up power system. This system with it's associated batteries, chargers, control panels, and power conditioning units, etc., is very large, and is housed in a special room, with a cement floor. Each individual UPS unit is mounted on it's own concrete mounting platform. This hugh UPS system has the ability to supply power to the entire 80,000 sq. ft. server facility, at full load, for one hour without any outside power source. This state of the art power conditioning system, (UPS), is on line all the time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, ready for backup if needed.

Diesel Generator Backup Power:
To further supply power, a backup diesel generator system is in place. While the UPS will continue to supply power during a power failure, these diesel generators automatically start up. There are multiple 1.8 MegaWatt 16 cylinder Caterpillar generators on site. There is a 50,000 gallon supply of diesel fuel on site, in a small fully secured, tank farm outside. There is a water pool and water tank system, in the tank farm, to keep the diesel tanks cooled down should the need arise. Outside fuel suppliers are also on standby to supply additional fuel, should more fuel be needed. The 50,000 gallon diesel fuel supply stored in the tanks on site, is constantly being circulated through the entire fuel system to eliminate algae growth in the fuel. A triple fuel filter system, (primary, secondary, and backup secondary), is used to insure the very cleanest fuel supply possible to the generator fuel injectors. There are enough of these 1.8 MegaWatt 16 cylinder Caterpillar generators, (10), on site, to pull the entire power load of the facility with two generators as spares on standby. These generators are housed in a separate, well ventilated, modern, generator building. Regular generator maintenance is performed each week. Each one of these generators is tested by running the generators one by one, and thoroughly checking each one's performance.

Hard Drive Replacement:
Each server has three hard drives. Each hard drive is being constantly read from, and being written to, at the same time. Each of the hard drives are hot swappable., allowing for actual hard drive equipment changes to be made without shutting down the server itself. In fact, server hard drives can be swapped out while someone is accessing a web site from one of the other server hard drives, as maintenance is being performed. This is handled in the following manner: each server has a drop down panel on it's front, allowing for internal server repairs without removal of the main server chassis from the rack. In order to change out a hard drive, the front server panel is opened, a latch on the hard drive is unlatched, and the latch then becomes a pull handle. With an outward pull on the handle, the hard drive easily glides out of the case. The hard drives are on a track, similar to a standard drawer track. All the connectors on the back of the hard drive are flush mount, and mate up with the server chassis when a hard drive is replaced. Changing out hard drives only takes a couple of minutes with this arrangement. The software on the server senses the new hard drive, and immediately writes a copy of all the data from the other drives to the new one.

Hard Drive Backup & Data Recovery:
Since we are running multiple hard drives on each server, you have the original and copies of your site on line all the time. The server is able to access data from either of the hard drives at any given time. The server is therefore able to read the data from your site, and supply it to the Internet, at a much greater speed than accessing a single drive. The benefits of this additional redundancy, and it's added access speed are obvious. We also provide additional data security by the use of a daily tape backup of site data. If you accidentally delete portions of your site, and do not have a copy, we can help. We have an archived copy. There is however, an additional charge for this type of data recovery.
